Abstract: Gone With the Wind is the only works of American writer Margaret Mitchell. On the background of Atlanta and a nearby plantation, the story depicts many characteristics from the southern areas. The heroine, Scarlett is a rebellious and selfish girl, but she is also enthusiastic about her life. The thesis mainly analyzes her overview of her marriage and career during different periods. At the beginning, Scarlett views her marriage as a tool to retaliate on Ashley. Then, she regards her second marriage as a tool to survive and support her family. Last, her overview of marriage is a rational choice on account of the love, position, economic capability and so on. Also, when it comes to her overview of career, she does not have any plan about her future career when she is a noble lady. With the contagion of the war, she starts to understand the importance of her own career. Finally, she makes her own business and achieves success.
