摘要：在我国甘肃临夏地区（河州）居住着这样的一个民族——东乡族。其民族信奉的宗教为伊斯兰教，重大的节日和其他穆斯林民族都是一样的，有“开斋节”、“古尔邦节”、“圣经日”等等。由于东乡族的祖先是从12世纪中细亚一带的萨尔塔迁徙过来的，所以该民族又自称“萨尔塔”，撒尔塔原始意思为“商贾”。东乡有自己的语言，语言是东乡语言蒙古语言分支，也被称为“萨尔塔语”，但没有自己的文字。据2010年第六次全国人口普查统计数为510000人左右，主要从事农业和畜牧业。东乡族的舞蹈有着一些中亚地区民间舞蹈的明显特征，例如刚劲、豪迈、挺立，但又因一些地域环境、风俗习惯和宗教信仰的影响，导致东乡族舞蹈不仅仅有着中亚的刚劲、豪迈、挺立还有伊斯兰教的端庄含蓄。但是东乡族至今还没有一个具体的舞蹈教育体系，使东乡族舞蹈的发展、传承陷入举步维艰的困境之中。
