Abstract: The present paper aims to analyze the influence of the distinction between Chinese and English customs on the study of oral English for English majors through four aspects: 1. festival customs, 2. traditional etiquette, 3. idioms and proverbs and 4. language of politeness. Furthermore, in this paper, the author illustrates the reasons for the influence by taking apart British and Chinese differences in natural environment and economic background,ways of thinking and so on. This paper is meant to attach great importance to the recognition and understanding of the distinction between Chinese and English customs among English majors, so that they can practice their oral English in a more effective way by reducing those mistakes in English communication made out of misunderstanding or even ignorance of the distinction between Chinese and English customs.

摘要:本文通过对中英两国在节日风俗、传统礼仪、习语谚语文化以及礼貌语言这四个方面的文化差异研究,首先分析了中英风俗习惯差异对英语专业大学生口语学习的影响,并结合自身英语口语学习经验,从中英两国自然环境与经济背景、文化传统、思维方式、生活习惯、语言环境等差异方面阐述了中英风俗习惯差异对英语专业大学生口语学习产生影响的原因,旨在引起英语专业学生对认识和理解中英风俗习惯差异的重视,帮助他们有效的进行英语口语学习,减少因不了解中英风俗习惯差异而在英语口语学习中产生口语交际错误。

  In conclusion, the distinction between English and Chinese customs to some degree influences the study of oral English for English majors,as it reflects four aspects on culture: festival customs,traditional etiquette,idioms and proverbs and language of politeness. The reasons for the influence concern natural environment and economic background, ways of thinking, language background and so on.

  English majors should attach great importance to the recognition and understanding of the distinction between Chinese and English customs, so that they can practice their oral English in a more effective way by reducing mistakes in English communication made out of ignorance.
