ABSTRACT:This paper made a contrastive analysis of the reasons of Uncle Tom and Eliza’s characteristics in the following aspects: their different gender, their different ideas on religious, their different family background and their different reactions to oppression. At the same time, it analyzed the effects of their characteristics on their destiny so as to enable people to have a better understanding of the saying “One’s characteristics may decide one’s destiny”. This paper may help readers have a deeper understanding of both Uncle Tom and Eliza’s image in the novel and the theme of the novel.

摘要:本文主要从汤姆叔叔和伊丽莎不同的性别、对宗教教义的不同理解、不同的家庭背景以及在受到压迫时的不同反应等对比分析了他们的性格形成的原因及其他们各自的性格对他们命运的影响，让人们更加理解“性格决定命运”。本文能帮助读者更深刻地理解汤姆叔叔和伊丽莎在《汤姆叔叔的小屋》中的形象，对小说的主题有一个更深刻的理解。

From what has been discussed above, a conclusion may be safely drawn that it was Uncle Tom and Eliza’s distinctive characteristics that resulted in their opposite endings ----their different destiny. The reasons for their different characteristics were resulted from their different gender, their different understanding of the Christian doctrine, their different family background as well as their different reactions to oppression.
Nowadays, more and more people believe in the saying “One’s characteristics may decide one’s destiny”. Such analysis may not only enable readers to have a deeper understanding of the theme of the novel, but also learn some useful elements from Uncle Tom and Eliza. From Uncle Tom, readers can learn that one should be loyal, kind and generous and should be oneself when in trouble. From Eliza, readers can learn that keeping a rebellious spirit sometimes may lead to success.
