Abstract:It is well-known that the interactions between teachers and students are various. Among them, questioning is one of the most important ones. It is a major means of improving efficiency in English teaching. However, there are many problems in questioning. The thesis devotes a discussion to the importance and function of questioning, the definition of effective questioning, and the issues in questioning techniques in the hope of improving questioning techniques in the English classroom.

Through what has been discussed above, we understand further about the importance and function of questioning. Based on the definition of effective questioning the thesis points out problems in questioning and discusses some effective techniques in questioning for the teachers by analyzing the examples collected from English class. This purpose of this thesis is to tell teachers that questioning plays a very important role in English teaching, so they should use effective techniques as a guideline in questioning to avoid problems discussed in the thesis. Nevertheless, the thesis is not inclusive and comprehensive because there may be other ways in which effective questioning can be achieved; questioning is closely related to psychology and teachers’ educational background. Therefore, a further study is still necessary.
