Abstract:The thesis analyses the character of the two females and its influence on their marriage in Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility, in order that we can find the relationship between people’s character and marriage. The paper discussed: Elinor’s character, the influence of Elinor’s character on her marriage. Then it continued to probe into Marianne’s character and the influence of Marianne’s character on her marriage. Marianne represented the person who had emotion but no reason. Elinor was more rational than emotional while her sister Marianne was emotional. The thesis unfolded as the heroines chose their mates. It shows the bad overfall that women need to marry a rich man to change their low position. It also shows the ugly practice that people only thought a lot of money but no emotion. The purpose of the thesis is to expose the relationship between human character and marriage.
It shows, human character will effect marriage. Living conditions, family background and experiences and so on may effect people’s marriage. It is concluded that people should not have no emotion, and we should restrict our emotion to our reasons. A wise combination of love with money can bring a happy marriage.
