Abstract:As a novelist and poet, Thomas Hardy mixed the features of novel and poem together in his writing. As far as style is concerned, Hardy firmly followed the tradition of realism, but at the same time, abundant employment of symbolism, metaphor and psychological analysis prevail in his works, making neatly definite and allegoric effect, which has enforce its realism and special artistic charm. The essay uses typical examples to show the employment of symbolism in Tess of the D’Urbervilles, a masterpiece of Thomas Hardy. This paper will mainly focus on his employment of symbolism in Tess of the D’Urbervilles from four aspects including name symbols, scene symbol, animals and plants symbols and pictorial symbol, to explore the role they play of the theme.

中文摘要:作为小说家和诗人的托马斯•哈代，往往在创作中把小说与诗歌的创作因素互相渗透。就风格而言，哈代严格地遵循了现实主义的传统，同时，也运用了大量的象征主义，比喻和心理分析等手法，巧妙地营造一定的寓意性效果，从而使他的小说有着特殊的艺术魅力。他的代表作《德伯家的苔丝》再现了象征主义手法的运用。本文将针对小说《德伯家的苔丝》中象征主义手法的运用，从人名地名象征、场景象征、动植物象征、绘画象征四个方面来探索其对主题实现的作用。
