Abstract:This thesis is in an effort to delve into the superiority and the inferiority in reproducing the mood of the original from three aspects through contrasting three English versions of Chang Hen Ge, a Chinese verse. A comparison is made among the three English versions translated respectively by three well-known translators, Yang Hsien-yi, Xu Yuanchong and Witter Bynner. By contrast, the thesis makes readers understand more about the importance of verse translation and the points to which more attention should be attached with a view to reproducing the original mood, then facilitating their understanding and expressing in verse translation. Examples have been cited to reveal whether translators had reproduced the original mood in target language and the extent to which they did so. In the end, the thesis safely draws a conclusion that in verse translation translators should pay more attention to meanings in preserving the original mood.
