Abstract:Many critics and feminists are attracted by the female writer,George Eliot, in the Victorian Age. In her writing, George Eliot protrays the silent situation of female and manifests the twisting image of female characters and the image of male characters that is overstated under the patriarchal culture. Meanwhile, she challenges the patriarchal culture, awakes the feminist consciousness and supports women fright for equal right. This paper tends to analyse how George Eliot in Middlemarch has made some changes to the image of female characters and bring the split self into a unified one. She creats the flaws in female characters as well as the male characters with the purpose to reduce the gender differences. Moreover, she points out the fact that they can not fulfill their aspiring ambitions because of their own flaws and situation.

中文摘要:英国维多利亚时代的女作家乔治爱略特历来备受许多批评家和女权主义者的关注。她以特有的文学创作方式道出了在男权文化之下女性的失语状态，彰显了传统文学笔下的女性被扭曲的形象和男性被夸大的形象，并以反传统的方式向男权文化提出挑战和颠覆，唤醒了沉睡的女性意识，支持女性争取平等的地位。本文旨在分析在《米德尔马契》中，乔治爱略特对女性人物的刻画改变了男性作家作品中的分裂的女性形象，使女性形象逐渐走向完善。她在揭示女性弱点的同时，也揭示了男性弱点，力图弱化两性的差距；也反映了他们因为各自的弱点和环境的限制使他们的远大抱负不能得以实现。
