Abstract:Proverbs are fixed words or phrases spread orally among people, reflecting deep morals in a few simple and common words. They are expressions of people’s rich social living experience, sparkling with the light of the wisdom of people. In addition, proverbs are characterized by compact and symmetrical sentence structures full of rhythm and expressiveness. Every proverb teaches, enlightens and persuades people with a special meaning. The present thesis studies the translation of English proverbs, a branch of English translation.
The domestic representative on translation is a contemporary translator named Yan Fu, who proposed the translating theory as "Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance" in the translation of Evolution and Ethics in 1896. Internationally, Nida put forward Dynamic Equivalence in Toward a Science of Translating (1964).
This thesis aims at studying profound meanings embedded in English proverbs from the perspective of characteristics, discussing factors influencing proverbs translation and exploring proper methods for translating English proverbs. It is sincerely hoped that it can offer, to some degree, reference in this aspect.
