Abstract:This paper focuses on the determinant of Judy’s success from an orphan to an authoress in Daddy-long-legs. The paper will analyze Judy’s success from two aspects and try to explore the meaning of her success. In the first part, I’ll discuss the internal cause--- her characteristics. Though she is a girl of low birth, she is optimistic, self-confident, independent, gratitude and self-discovered. That’s why after receiving the help of Daddy-long-legs, she can succeed. In the second part, I’ll discuss the external cause---the assistance of Daddy-long-legs. Then, I’ll come to the conclusion that both the internal cause and the external cause make Judy succeed. The internal cause is her characteristics and the external cause is opportunity.

中文摘要:本论文主要关注并分析美国著名小说家简·韦伯斯特所著《长腿叔叔》一书中，女主人公茱蒂从默默无闻的孤儿蜕变成女作家的成功因素。本文将从两个部分诠释茱蒂走向成功的必要因素。第一部分描述茱蒂自身原因(内因)——性格。尽管她的出身很卑微，但她是一个乐观、自信、独立、有原则、知道感恩、有明确目标的女孩。正是她的这些特质使她在得到“长腿叔叔”的帮助后，一步步走向成功。第二部分描述外因——长腿叔叔的帮助。最后，研究者得出结论：茱蒂的成功需要内外因共同作用，内因即她本身所做出的努力，外因即机遇。
