Abstract:Daphne du Maurier has established herself as a major eminence on the literary horizon in creating a world full of mystery and suspense. Due to her great contribution to literature, she was awarded Dame of Great Britain in 1969 and won the Grand Master Award by the Mystery Writers of America in 1977. Rebecca is known as Daphne’s masterpiece. Published in 1938, the novel became a bestseller and brought Daphne instant international acclaim and recognition.
Suspense is an important element of writing. Daphne du Maurier brings the technique of suspense into full play in her most famous novel Rebecca. She set a series of suspense, luring readers into the reading to guess what will happen next. Centering on the technique of suspense, this paper mainly explores how suspense is created in the novel.
The paper falls into four chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction to the author and her masterpiece Rebecca. Chapter two clarifies the definition of suspense. Chapter three analyzes the suspense created by flashbacks, settings, the first-person narrative and the plot. The last chapter is the conclusion.

摘要:达芙妮·杜穆里埃因其神秘、充满悬念的小说而独树一帜。鉴于对文学所做出的巨大贡献,她分别于1969、1977 年被授予大英帝国爵士勋位和美国神秘小说作家大师奖。1938 年出版的《蝴蝶梦》是杜穆里埃的成名作,一经出版便成为当时最畅销的小说,使杜穆里埃声名大振。
