ABSTRACT:Jane Eyre was a represent masterpiece of Charlotte Bronte who was a talented critical realism woman novelist in the 19th century. The society was controlled by men in the19th century, women were just their appendants, and they did not have any right and freedom. Women were only judged by two standards –wealth and appearance. At that time, the only way for them was to marry a rich man. Jane Eyre did not have wealth and beautiful appearance, but she was brave, tenacious, sincere, passionate, and she had the courage to pursue independence, freedom, equality, and to defend the value of the individual ideals. In the course of pursuing happiness, Jane Eyre encountered a lot of difficulties and setbacks; she made the indomitable struggles and insisted her ideals, freedom, and finally got happiness. Her independent spirit also made great influence to our contemporary women.
This article analyzes the background which Jane Eyre was born, and the environment which the author lived to analyze the formation of Jane Eyre’s character of independence, and how she grew up from a weak girl into an independent woman who dare to challenge to her fate and through her effort she made her vale of life come true and got a happy life at last as well as the behavior about her independent character, and her independent character made influence to her life. The purpose of the thesis is to enable reader to understand Jane Eyre’s personality of independence profoundly and completely.

摘 要:《简爱》是19世纪英国批判现实主义文学家夏洛蒂·勃朗特的代表作，她被认为是英国文学史上的一部杰出的小说。19世纪是一个被男人控制的世界，妇女仅仅被认为是他们的附庸，她们没有权利和自由。人们仅仅用财富和外貌作为判断女人的两个标准，所以在那个时代妇女的唯一出路就是嫁一个有钱人。然而简爱既不漂亮，又没有金钱,但是她顽强，勇敢，真诚，热情，敢于追求独立，自由，平等，捍卫个人的价值。在追求理想，幸福的路上，简爱遇到了很多的困难和挫折，她所做的不屈不挠的斗争，坚持自己的理想，自由，最终获得了美好的爱情和幸福，她的这种精神对我们当代的女性仍有很大的影响，她这种独立的性格永远都是我们学习的榜样
本文简单分析了作者所处那个时代的背景以及从作者生活的环境来阐述简爱性格的独立性形成的原因，她是如何由一个软弱的小女孩变成一个敢于向命运挑战并且通过自己的努力实现自我价值的成功女性，以及她在生活中独立性格的表现和她的独立性格对她今后生活所产生的影响。其目的在于帮助读者更好的理解简爱独立性格。
