Abstract:Charlotte Bronte is one of the most welcomed female writers in Victoria period of the world literature. Her work Jane Eyre,was welcomed by young people, especially welcomed by feminist as soon as it was published in 1847. There were so many studies on this novel after it was published. With the symbolism theory, this paper intends to discover the symbolic implications and effect of Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre. As an important part between coherent and unified, mad woman is in the whole plot of the novel. Mad woman is also a key symbol which shows us that Jane Eyre transcends the love novels, sings the praise of a deep-rooted love and human dignity of women. The author of this thesis thinks that mad woman is not a really crazy woman, but just a literature code, it plays a role as a go-between in the novel.

中文摘要:夏洛蒂·勃朗特是维多利亚时期的一位风靡世界文坛的伟大的女作家。她的作品《简爱》出版于1847年,该作品一经问世就受到青年男女的钟爱,特别是女权主义者的青睐。对该作品的研究可谓是络绎不绝,本文作者试图用象征主义理论对其进行解读,揭示作品所蕴涵的象征意蕴。疯女人在整个小说的情节中,她作为小说连贯和统一的重要组成部分,充当了一种关键性的象征:向我们提示了《简爱》对爱情小说的超越,既歌颂了一段刻骨铭心的爱情,又歌颂了女性的人格尊严价值。笔者认为疯女人并不是真实意义上的疯人,而是一个文学代码,在整篇小说中起着穿针引线的作用。
