Abstract:Virginia Woolf, a well-known English woman writer, whose contribution to modern literature mainly lies in her works of stream of consciousness and critic essays such as To the Lighthouse and Women and Fiction, is more famous as a feminist writer, however. Her challenges to patriarchal values and ways of seeing and expressing the world and the self set a model for other women’s challenges, both in literature and in life. Furthermore, women critics have used Woolf’s work as that of a literary foremother since the 1970s.
To the Lighthouse is one of Virginia Woolf’s classic works that represents “Androgyny”. It has enjoyed great popularity since its publish in 1927. In To the Lighthouse, Woolf conveys her unique feminist ideology through lots of imagery, specially focuses on Mrs Ramsay and the female painter Lilly Briscoe’s perspective. Through the description of their psychological activities, Woolf depicts not only the characters of women, but also the pursuit of “Androgyny” under the dilemma of freeing from the oppression from men and seeking the independence of women.
