Abstract:Ernest Miller Hemingway（1899―1961）, who is considered to be one of the most famous novelists in the 20th century and won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954. About a century ago, The Old Man and the Sea, which is the most representative works of him, has been published. Since then, people start discussing a new type of personality―an unyielding man. The novel tells a story about a battle between an old man and nature. It’s great struggling sprit of human beings. In this novel we can see that an old ordinary man with feelings makes achievements at last through his extraordinary courage and self-control ability.
The paper is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction, which presents the reason why the writer picked the topic and shows the background research, The Old Man and the Sea. Also, the writing background is included. The second part is dominating, which focuses on the old man showing his courage and struggling spirit in face of nature. The third part analysis the symbols in the novel. The forth is a reflection part. The last is conclusion. Readers could see how Hemingway definited to human nature, which is used to causing the thinking of modern people, and helping to make our own achievements.

摘要:欧内斯特·米勒尔·海明威（1899―1961）被认为是20世纪最著名的小说家之一。1954年，海明威获得诺贝尔文学奖。大约一个世纪之前，他最有代表性的作品，《老人与海》出版。自此，人们开始讨论一种新的形象―硬汉。这部小说主要讲述了一个老人和自然“战争”。这是人类伟大的抗争精神。从小说里，我们可以看到，一个富有感情的平凡的老人，通过非凡的勇气和自控能力，最终成功。
本文分为五个部分。第一部分主要介绍作者、作品《老人与海》以及写作背景。第二、三部分是最主要的部分，重点讲述在自然面前，老人表现出来的勇气和抗争精神和作品中象征意义的分析。第四部分主要分析抗争精神的反映和对作者的帮助。最后一部分为总结。读者可以看到，关于人，海明威是如何定义，以此而引发现代人的思考，从而帮助其获取成功。
