Abstract: The Portrait of a Lady is one of Henry James’ masterpieces and his fist mature book that fully illustrates his writing techniques and fictional theory. This fiction vividly depicts the experience of an innocent American girl Isabel in European countries. Here, she continues to seek for knowledge and freedom. And it is here she meets her husband and begins her tragic life. This thesis is to analyze Isabel’s spiritual pursuit in terms of her three life stages: the girlhood pursuing independence, the contradictory period of marriage and the gradually awakening stage of rebirth. Based on the above analysis, readers could have a better understanding of Isabel’s mental growth.

摘要：《贵妇人画像》是亨利·詹姆斯的代表作之一，也是他第一部成熟的作品。这部作品充分显示了詹姆斯的写作技巧和小说理念。《贵妇人画像》生动地描述了天真的美国女孩伊莎贝尔在欧洲的经历。在欧洲，伊莎贝尔继续追求知识，追求自由，也是在这里她遇上了自己的丈夫，开始了自己悲剧的人生。本文分析了伊莎贝尔人生三个阶段的精神追寻：追求独立的少女时代，矛盾的婚姻时期和逐渐觉醒后的重生。基于以上的分析，读者可对伊莎贝尔的精神成长有一个跟好的了解。
