Abstract: English is widely used in the world and English learners are paying more attention to English reading which is one of the most important channels of gaining knowledge and information. The paper investigates the current situation of reading English classics among first-year and second-year English majors in Yangzhou University. By interview and questionnaire method to the students, the aims are to find the importance of reading English classics to improve students’ English proficiency and morality. Based on the related theories of reading and the author’s own empirical study, this paper calls for more attention to enhance English majors’ English classic reading.

摘要：随着英语在世界上的广泛使用，英语阅读也越来越受到英语学习者的重视，它是我们获取知识和信息的重要途径。而对于英语爱好者来说，阅读英语经典名著显得更为重要。作者调查了扬州大学外国语学院英语专业一、二年级学生的英语经典名著的阅读现状。通过问卷调查和访谈的方式找出阅读英语经典名著对提高英语学习者英语能力和素养的重要性。同时结合相关的阅读理论，以及作者的学习经验，文章呼吁：应该加强英语学习者对英语经典名著的阅读。
