Abstract: Eugene O’Neill is the father of American drama. Beyond the Horizon is one of his best works. This thesis aims to analyze the causes of conflicts in the play. In the introduction, there is a brief account about Eugene O’Neill and the literature review. The following two chapters are the descriptions of the causes and conflicts. Based on the analyses, it is concluded that there always exists irreconcilable conflicts between ideals and reality in modern society characterized for fetishisms and alienation.

摘要：尤金·奥尼尔是美国戏剧之父。《天边外》正是其成名作。这篇论文旨在分析剧中矛盾冲突的原因。第一部分是对尤金·奥尼尔和文献的简短介绍。其次是对剧中矛盾冲突的阐述以及对产生这些冲突的原因从个人原因和社会原因两个方面进行具体的分析。通过分析，可以得出结论：在以商品拜物教和异化为特点的现代社会中，梦想和现实之间的矛盾往往是无法调和的。
