Abstract: Edgar Allan Poe was a famous poet, novelist and critics, who did great contribution to the horror fictions. Poe disclosed in his fictions the instinctive fear of human being towards super nature, emptiness, death and towards split personality. He tried hard to testify to us that “Human soul is the source of all fear.” This paper aims to discuss how Poe applied the very methods, the Psychological hint, description of detail for instances, to build the breathless horror in his works, and try to reveal and investigate the unique artistic charm through the analysis of Poe’s works: their thesis, backdrop, expression technique.

摘要：爱伦·坡是一位著名的诗人、小说家、批评家，他对恐怖小说作出了极大贡献。坡在作品中深刻地揭示出人们本能的对超自然的恐惧；对虚无、死亡的恐惧；对人性本能的恶、对人格分裂的恐惧。他竭力向人们证明“人的心灵是恐怖的源头”。本文论述了爱伦·坡如何运用多种手段(如利用心理、细节等因素所起的作用)在其作品中营造恐怖气氛,并试图通过对其创作恐怖小说的主题、背景、表现手法、恐怖美感的分析，展示并探讨其独特的艺术魅力。
