ABSTRACT:Because of the stronger openness and inclusiveness of English, it has absorbed kinds of loanwords, related to economy, science, technology, culture, diet, life, and so on. As China frequently contacts with the world and the relationship goes deeper, the fact should not be neglected that Chinese has greatly influenced English vocabulary system during the contact between English and Chinese.
From the aspects of etymology and semantics, combined with transliteration, loan translation and so on, this thesis explores the development and change of English vocabulary system in view of the language contact between English and Chinese in the new period. In the thesis, methods employed include literature analysis, the way of description and interpretation, a combination of synchronic and diachronic analyses. Based on the previous discussion of the influence of Chinese on English vocabulary system, combined with the characteristics of the new era, the paper deepens the discussion of the change of English vocabulary rules with the influence of Chinese, from the aspects of sound, form, meaning, and so on.
It is of great significance to study Chinese borrowings in English and the influence of Chinese on English vocabulary system. The author hopes that this paper can help readers know the Chinese borrowings in English better and deepen their understanding of the differences and fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. More importantly, it will help the exchange between Chinese and Western cultures.
