Abstract:Many scholars have ever made comparison and analysis of the translations of Hong Lou Meng. Some choose the topic of translation strategy; some choose the topic of culture background; and some just make comparison from the perspective of foreignization and domestication. The translation quality of verses in Hong Lou Meng to a large extent determines the whole translation quality of this works. In this paper, I choose two translators’ translations, because their translations are the classic versions of Hong Lou Meng and accepted by most people . They are Yang Xianyi (and his wife Glads) and David Hawkes. In order to make a better understanding of the translations of “An Ode to Faerie” in Hong Lou Meng, I analyze translations from Language Type, Language Strategy, Rhetorics and Culture. Through detailed analysis, it is expected to make clear the characteristics of translators’ translation style.
