Abstract:Cultural translation, based on the close connection between translation and culture, shifts the translation unit from the text to the culture, which opens up a new angle of view for translation study. Poetry, which is the most refined and concentrated literary forms, contains rich cultural connotation and reflects the unique traditional cultural of the nation. The image, the important element of composing the poems, forms syntactic structure, style and becomes a part of the creed of the poet’s life. In essence, the translation of images is to achieve cross-cultural connection among the different nations. Tagore’s poetry is beautiful in language, rich in images and filled with the philosophical ideas of life.
The thesis takes Chinese versions by Zheng Zhenduo of Tagore’s Stray Birds as the case study to study the E-C translation of images from the perspective of cultural translation and based on the analysis of classification and features of images points out that the translator should abide by the principles of fidelity, smoothness and aesthetic quality and adopt the methods of replacing with equivalent images and replacing with unequivalent images.
