Abstract:This paper aims to explore the loneliness of the protagonist, Eugene including his expressions, causes as well as effects. His loneliness finds its way in his personality, his thirst of freedom as well as his desire for independence. Then the paper analyzes the causes of his loneliness. His loneliness has resulted from the uncertainty swing of people’s thought, the unfortunate marriage of his parents and his unhappy childhood life as well. The paper also analyzes the effect of his loneliness. Loneliness makes him have a thirst for knowledge and the desire for freedom, which makes him seek his independence. Finally, the Paper draws the conclusion that Eugene’s loneliness is an important part of the process of his growth, which is of great treasure of life for the protagonist, Eugene.
