Abstract：English synonyms are so rich that they can be seen everywhere. As Simon Potter writes in his book ‘Our language is like clothes, which should be changed on different occasions.”From this,we can see that the mastering of many English words ,especially synonyms will enable us to correctly express our thoughts. This paper focuses on the synonymous phenomena of English words and sentences,based on the study of Advanced English test, probes into the definition of synonymy, synonym, sources of English synonym,differences,application,etc.Synonyms may carry different meaning in different contexts.The study of synonymy in application and teaching can help us have a better understanding of English synonyms ,master the use of synonyms and enrich the expressiveness of language.
