ABSTRACT
With the further development of China's reform and opening up in recent years, people tend to have access to English language. In such contact, some English abbreviations, such as MVP, IBM, etc, come into Chinese vocabulary, which has greatly enrich the Chinese language. In order to help English learners know English abbreviations more comprehensively and know the manifestations of English abbreviations, this paper, based on Dalian Evening News, studies on the types of English abbreviations, such as clipped words, initialism, acronym and blend. It deeply analyses the application of English abbreviations in Chinese language from the aspect of their range of application, including politics, economy, science and technology, medicine and others, which is substantially conducive to people's English study, daily life and work. This paper also analyses the causes for the application of English abbreviations, such as lexical gap, economical factor and psychological factor. It discusses the positive and negative influence of the application of English abbreviations on Dalian Evening News and points out some problems in the application of English abbreviations in Dalian Evening News. Finally, it presents several strategies for the application of English abbreviations in order to promote the effective use of English abbreviations in Chinese language and facilitate economic and intercultural exchanges.
