Abstract
The Scarlet Letter is the representative work of Hawthorne. It has become a hit among the readers ever since it has been published. The great popularity successfully wins it the most influential work in the 19th century. Most of the scholars both at home and abroad concentrate on the literary significance of The Letter A while overlooks the settings Hawthorn specifically designs in the book. The paper starts with the introduction about the story. Followed with the studies made by scholars both at home and abroad, aiming to help the readers to acknowledge the status of the studies of this topic. Then it is the main body of the paper, which is the setting. I made an analysis from four perspectives, including the town, the scaffold, the forest and the sunshine. And the last part is the conclusion.
