Abstract
This dissertation is based on the studies of religious philosophy and impact of religion on national culture. Through the analysis of Aylmer and Georgiana’s character, the author gives the proof that how deeply they are affected by Puritanism.
The thesis can be divided into four parts. The first chapter is about some introduction to Puritanism in the Birthmark including definition and development of Puritanism. The second part analyzes the influence of family and religion and the original sin. Next part is mainly about discussion on the embodiment of Puritanism in the story. The last chapter talks about the influence of Puritanism in the Birthmark both on American society and on American literature.
By discussing Puritanism in the short story, the author tries to analyze how to treat extreme Puritans on the basis of Puritan tradition and the view of moral humanity, and to awaken human thoughts of polishing human soul.
