Abstract
Reading, as an essential part of what is considered as today’s English teaching, is believed to be a bridge spanning the writer and the readers and is seen as a required skill for students to master when learning English. To most English learners, better reading skills are almost always a more effective assistance to their English learning. This dissertation, built on the theories in English reading teaching, the combination of related findings at home and abroad and the experiences of my own teaching practice, analyzes the main problems in current English reading teaching and proposes the solutions in three respects concerning vocabulary, grammar and background knowledge from the prospects of teachers and students. The thesis stresses the importance of English reading and puts forward three strategies for the teaching of English Reading: stimulating students’ enthusiasm in reading; selecting appropriate reading materials; teaching reading skills. It is expected that this dissertation can be used as reference for any efforts aimed at further improving the teaching of English Reading, teaching students how to read and helping them to read in an interesting and effective way.
