Abstract
Ellipsis is of major importance in the process of translation, because some English words are not expressed in written Chinese. Ellipsis is used on the base of the text, and the purpose of it is to make the translation more smooth, fluent and concise, which is in line with the habitual expression way of Chinese. In conclusion, ellipsis is more than the omission of the content of the original text, it also means better expression on the base of faithfulness.
This paper is composed of five Chapters. Chapter One briefly introduces the significance and purpose of this study. Chapter Two explains the concept of omission and the theory of Skopostheorie. Chapter Three indicates that the aim of omission in English-Chinese translation is to meet the English cultural backgrounds and conform to the English customs. Chapter Four states some specific applications of ellipsis method, including applications of nouns, function words, pronouns such as pronouns. Chapter Five draws a conclusion of the paper.
