Abstract:ELT is an abbreviation for English Language Teaching, which is the teaching of English to people whose first language is not English. Nowadays, ELT pays more attention to the ability of communication. So the teacher’s roles are different from the ones before. This paper mainly has a discussion about the multiple roles that teachers play in ELT classes, including the teacher’s roles in traditional ELT classes and in modern ones, and make an analysis of them. The good teacher never merely works as a deliverer of information, but takes on the roles as a mentor, an assessor, facilitator, a participant, a director in cultural teaching and morality, and a learner as well.

Because of the requirements of quality education, there have been great changes happening in the existing teaching mode, so the roles of the teacher should change accordingly. The teacher is supposed to take into consideration different the cognitive, effective as well as social factors that involve English language teaching, because every individual student is an integrated and dynamic body. Teachers must be full of proficiency to enable their students to make some academic achievements. Then they are supposed to facilitate learning by encouraging and motivating students and providing them with a comfortable learning environment. Language teachers are also supposed to pay attention to foster the right attitudes of students towards different cultures. Moreover, teachers themselves are learners as well.
