Abstract: Tennessee Williams is one of the most famous dramatists in America who exerts a great influence on the American drama and culture in the 20th century. A Streetcar Named Desire is set in the America of 20th century and it tells the tragic story of Blanche who suffered domestic misfortune and turned help for her sister and finally was raped by Stanley. Williams enhances the tragic effect of protagonist and the artistic effect of this play by symbolic method. Many symbols convey the tragic meaning of Blanche’s destiny, such as names, bathing and sounds. It is very important for us to analyze and reflect this technique to better understand the theme of this drama.
