Abstract: Charles Dickens, one of the greatest representatives of English critical realism, produced countless works in his whole writing career. From Charles’ works, we can get a very vivid picture of the daily life of the ordinary people of his time. Great Expectations which is one of the most familiar books to lots of readers was created in Charles’ later period of his writing career. The hero Pip who had an unfortunate childhood becomes a classical image in readers’ heart. This paper aims to make out, through analyzing the environment, the things and people around Pip, the proof and reasons for the formation of Pip’s personality in some aspects, as well as the influence of Pip’s personality on his fate and his whole life. Besides, Pip’s experience also can give some inspiration and enlightenment to us who live in the modern time.
