ABSTRACT
Since the 1990s, Chinese elements such as Chinese Kungfu, Chinese story, Chinese philosophy, Chinese food, and so on, become extremely popular among Hollywood films. On the one hand, this phenomenon shows that the improvement of China’s national strength has provided a vast stage for the spread of culture. On the other hand, it also suggests that the global cultural exchange is frequent and Chinese film market has huge potential. There is no denying that Hollywood has achieved tremendous success in its application of Chinese elements.
However, the interpretation of Chinese cultural elements in Hollywood films is as much praised as blamed. As Chinese audiences, we feel gratified by those right interpretations, but for phenomena that distort and demonize China as well as Chinese nation, we must determinedly resist. Especially, some Hollywood films express and interpret Chinese culture mechanically and just for visual effect.
Through the study of four parts, namely Chinese people, Chinese actors and actresses, Chinese well-known places, Chinese philosophy, this paper intends to explain main Chinese elements in Hollywood films for the past decade and discover the underlying influence on both China and the international society behind such a phenomenon.
