ABSTRACT
Chunk refers to a multi-word unit used frequently in daily verbal communication for its relatively fixed collocation, acceptability of vocabulary and grammar and specific discourse function. Chunk is widely recognized by the English learners and teachers and is progressively replacing the traditional verbal unit word for its important role in SLA. Chunk could help improve language leaners’ oral fluency, purity and accuracy of the target language.
This study, based on interview and case study, tries to explore the role of chunk in second language acquisition and teaching. The results show that it, on the whole, plays a positive role. Chunks also help second language learners achieve normative and natural language performance in verbal communication. It is hoped that this study can provide certain significant implication for English teaching and contributes to improving learner’s second language (English) learning efficiency
