Abstract: This paper states the basic concept of number, as well as the relationship among the numbers, culture and languages. It aims to explore the specific connotations of several Chinese and English numbers from the perspective of culture. Different preferences, taboos and attitudes toward odd and even numbers are also analyzed by listing examples and making comparisons , so as to find out the different numerical connotations and reveal the different social customs and nation thoughts between China and Anglo-American countries. What’s more, this paper also discusses the factors contributing to these differences from such aspects as historical traditions, religion, social customs and thought patterns.
