Abstract: The development of Britain from the 17th century to the 19th century and the policy of language assimilation Britain carrying out in his colonies contributed to the spread of English for the first time. From 20th century to now, the economic and military force of English speaking countries, especially America, and the advancement in technology and film industry in their country gave English its status the status for the second time, making English become the global language. But will this status continue in the future? Some people think it is possible that English will continue to be the global language, others hold the contrary opinion. In fact, both situations are possible. In the process of spread, English has been affected by other languages. The varieties of English may not become unintelligible languages, but these varieties will continue to be localized. With the development of the third world, the status of the varieties of English in the third world will rise. According to this trend, the suggestions for our country’s English education planning are put forward. Firstly, we should not only study American English or British English, but also the varieties of English, especially South Africa and Indian English. Secondly, considering the profit English-speaker countries have gained from the spread of English, we should try to spread Chinese language and culture.

Key words: the future development of English; English education planning; impacts on English; English Varieties
