Abstract: Thomas Hardy’s The Return of the Native occupied an important position in Britain and even the world literature. This paper is aimed to study the theme of new female figure in the novel by analyzing the main character Eustacia’s constant pursuit of freedom, the urban life and the true love. Eustacia shows no regard for Victoria patriarchal social norms, and she has the courage to pursue her own happiness, which are quite different from the traditional female figure. Although all her efforts end up in a tragedy, her struggle and awakening not only encourage a lot of women at that time, but also enlighten modern women to keep themselves independent and self-esteemed in this materialistic society.
