Abstract: The Return of the Native is regarded as a representative “character and environment” novel of the famous realistic novelist Thomas Hardy in the nineteenth century. This paper aims to study female consciousness in the novel through an analysis of Eustacia’s rebellious acts. Eustacia bravely pursues independence, freedom and true love. She has a specific aim, and sticks to it. In order to realize her dream, Eustacia challenges the traditional social conventions, struggles against hostile environment and unhappy marriage, and continually strives for equal social status under patriarchy, which forms a striking contrast to other females.
Key words: The Return of the Native; Eustacia; female consciousness
