Abstract: In learning a foreign language, one should not only learn the language itself, but its euphemistic expressions as well. Euphemism is one of the most common rhetorical devices and language features in English language. Therefore, special attention should be paid to euphemism in daily English communication. This article aims to explore the use of euphemism. It first introduces the definition and features of euphemism in English, then it elaborates on English euphemism from the purpose of taboo, the purpose of cover and the purpose of politeness so as to present readers a panorama of euphemism in English language. Finally the paper comes to the conclusion that English learners should be more aware of the importance of euphemism so as to not be hindered in their cross-cultural communication. The application of English euphemism in daily life is of great importance, which is the key to the more effective and appropriate way of English communication in social life.
