Abstract
Stefan Zweig was a famous Australian dramatist, novelist and literary critic in the 20th century. Most of his works are concerned with the fate of women, which describe women’s emotional pain and their tragic lives in the patriarchal society.
Written after the World War I, Letter from an Unknown Woman is considered as the turning point of Zweig’s literary career. With a gentle tone, it tells a life-long love story of an unknown woman who silently waited for and devoted her whole life to her lover, who even barely knew her.
This paper tends to analyze the image of the female character in the novel and explores the possible reasons for the creation. The unknown woman is gentle, passionate, selfless and faithful to love. For Zweig, the woman is a symbol of virtue. Through the characterization of this female character, Zweig expressed his sympathy and admiration for women. It is hoped that through this paper readers can have a better understanding of the author and the text.
