Abstract
Hermeneutics is a theory focuses on the understanding and transmission of meaning. In the process of translation, it is essential to understand and transmit the source language. Therefore, Hermeneutics has practical influence on poems translation. Translation is the transmission from a language into another, concentrating on accuracy and coherence. Translator, as the medium of two languages, has played a significant part in translation, and the quality of translated versions is greatly confined to translator’s subjectivity.
The thesis makes analysis on the effect caused by translator’s subjectivity by comparing five translated versions of “When You Are Old” from the perspective of Hermeneutics, and probes the factors that have influenced translator’s subjectivity in the process of poems translation. It points out that in translation, the cultural background and linguistic ability of the translator influence translation to a large extent, and the translator needs to understand the connotation of the original and transmit the original author’s intention faithfully, at the same time, the translator should take into account the interesting and psychological culture of the target readers.
