ABSTRACT:With technology unceasing advancement and globalization quickening speed, film works are playing more and more positive roles in ever-increasing intercultural communication, having become an effective medium for people with different languages and cultures to understand each other. To make SL film works better appreciated and foreign culture better understood by TL audiences, many film works need subtitle's translation.
However, due to the limitations of time and space, and the particular expressing habits and manners of certain culture, subtitle's translation is not easy. To manage the relation of culture between SL and TL, translators are usually required to make the choice between domestication and foreignization--the two principal translation strategies that have long been disputed in translation circle.
Based on the study on Chinese subtitle's translation in Season One of the globally-prevalent American drama Desperate Housewives, this thesis aims to analyze the application of domestication and foreignization from three representative angles--people's name, religious language, proverb and idiom. The result is that domestication and foreignization are co-existent and complementary to ensure the translation natural, fluent, and successful.

摘要:随着科技的不断进步和全球化进程的加快,影视作品在日益广泛的跨文化交流过程中起着越来越积极的作用,已然成为不同语言和不同文化背景下的人们互相了解的一种有效途径。为了让观众更好的欣赏国外译制片和了解外国文化,许多影视作品需要进行字幕翻译。
然而,由于时间和空间方面的局限性,以及不同文化特有的表达习惯和方式,影视字幕的翻译并不简单。为了处理好源语文化和目的语文化的关系, 译者通常需要在被翻译界争论已久的两种重要翻译策略中做出选择,即归化与异化。
本文将以全球热播美剧《绝望的主妇》第一季的中文字幕翻译为例,试图从人名、宗教语言、谚语和习语这三个具有代表性的角度,分析归化与异化在影视字幕翻译中的应用,论证二者共同存在互为补充,以保证自然、通顺、成功的译文。
