Abstract:This thesis aims at revealing the blind confidence and worship of British and Siamese toward their own nations in Anna and the King from the perspective of ethnocentrism. In this way, it can motivate people to reflect their own ethnocentric behaviors and their prejudice against other cultures, so that people can change their old thoughts and broaden their horizon to be more impartial to other different cultures. The research paper will introduce the definition of ethnocentrism at first. Then typical characters and conversations embodying ethnocentrism in the novel Anna and the King will be analyzed to help explain the causes and negative effects of it. Proposal to the future research about this topic will be raised in the end. Since few scholars have analyzed ethnocentrism in Anna and the King till now, problems about ethnocentrism in this novel are revealed to draw people’s attention to reflect their ethnocentrism and improve their behavior. Therefore, such negative ethnic superiority and obstacles in the cross-cultural communication can be reduced for better understanding and inclusiveness among nations in the world and help promote development of advanced cultures.
