Abstract:Face-negotiation theory proposed by Ting-Toomey has been widely used to explain conflict in interpersonal communication. The purpose of the current study is to explore facework behaviors and face management styles of female college students based on face-negotiation theory. Both qualitative (focus group) and quantitative (survey questionnaire) research methods are employed to investigate how the students act or react when they are in conflict with relationally different roommates. The major findings of this research are as follows: (a) Female college students prefer integrating facework to avoiding one, and the dominating facework is still least used during conflict; (b) Relational closeness affects specific facework behaviors within a category, but it has limited effect and does not alter the overall pattern of conflict management style.
