Abstract:Being at the bottom of the society, black women suffer from the binary oppression of sexism and racism; consequently, their voices have been marginalized and constrained by male-dominated patriarchal societies. In the closely woven net of the male-dominated discourse system, black women have to speak the males' languages and think in their modes, or else they have to remain silent. Their voices are completely dominated and subjugated by masculine discourse. Therefore, in order to break the bondage of patriarchal society, black women have to overturn the paternal discourse, find their own voices and set up their language system.
So this thesis will analyze Celie’s awakening in language which leads to her awakening of female self-consciousness in two fields. The first is Celie’s awakening in voice, and she has gone through three stages: voiceless, awakening, and realizing her voice liberty. The second is Celie’s awakening in written narrative as revealed in the changes in her letters. The one change is the letters’ addressee, which changes from “Dear God” to “Dear Nettie”; the other one is the letters’ signature, which is from no signature to signature “Your sister, Celie”. These two changes stand as sound evidence for Celie’s awakening in female self-consciousness.
