Abstract:William Faulkner is one of the most influential people in the American literature. During his life, numerous works of his were published, and most of his works are related to the south of America. A Rose for Emily is one of his short stories and it reflects the life of a southern noble lady—Miss Emily.
A Rose for Emily was firstly published in 1930 in Forum, which represents the history of the decline of the southern aristocratic class. The main person of this novel, Miss Emily, is a typical example of the aristocratic in the south of America. She almost lived her whole life in solitary, even slept with a corpse for years. This paper reveals and analyzes the reasons of Emily’s lifelong tragedy mainly from two aspects: the social milieu and the personal attribute. As for the personal attribute, it can be divided from three important aspects: Emily’s father, Homer Barron and the town people in Jefferson. Furthermore, the paper will also help its reader to comprehend the society of the south at that time and Faulkner’s literature thought.

摘要:威廉.福克纳,美国历史上最有影响力的作家之一。在他发表的大多数作品中,主题都与美国南方有关。《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》就是其中一部描写南方贵族少女艾米丽的短篇小说。
1930年,《献给艾米丽的玫瑰》首次发表在《论坛》杂志上,它反映的是南方贵族阶级日趋没落的历史。主人公艾米丽是一个典型的南方贵族小姐,但她一生孤寂甚至常年与尸骨共枕而眠。本文主要从社会成因和人为因素两方面来分析造成了艾米丽悲惨人生的原因。在人为因素方面,从艾米丽的父亲、男朋友以及杰弗逊镇的村民入手来研究。同时,本文也帮助读者了解当时的南方社会和福克纳的文学思想。
