Abstract: Different understanding about animal images by Chinese and Western people affects the translation of animal-related idioms. The thesis aims to analyze the animal images in English and Chinese idioms. Starting from the differences between the four aspects of English and Chinese Languages—geographic environments, historical cultures, religions and beliefs, manners and customs, this paper discusses 4 translation methods in 2 different conditions. For animal images with not much difference in English and Chinese idioms, we can use literal translation and literal translation with explanation. For animal images with great differences in English and Chinese idioms, we can use liberal translation and borrowing.

摘要：中西方国家的人们对于动物形象的不同理解对于与动物有关的中外习语的翻译影响很大。本文从中西方国家的地理环境、历史文化、宗教信仰和风俗习惯四个方面的差异入手，分析中外习语中的动物形象，重点论述了在中外习语中差异不大的动物形象和差别较大的动物形象这两种情况，对于前者，我们可以使用直译法和直译加解释法；对于后者则可以使用意译法和借用法。
