Abstract: The Chinese character “hong”, one of the most symbolic color words in Chinese, has profound cultural connotations. This paper aims at revealing the cultural connotations of “hong” in its three sources: namely, “blood”, “fire” and “the sun” , discussing its extended meanings, and trying to find a proper way to translate Chinese idioms with the character “hong” in them from some Chinese literature works by means of reciprocation, amplification, and substitution.

摘要：汉字“红”是中华民族最具代表意义的颜色词之一，文化内涵深厚、丰富。本文将从“红”的三个特色的文化内涵“血”、“火”、“日”作为切入点，探寻其延伸意义。通过对应法、增词法和替换法分析中国古典文学作品中含有红色词的成语翻译，探讨汉语颜色词“红”的英译途径。
