Abstract:Amy Tan is a Chinese American woman writer and she is famous for her first novel, The Joy Luck Club. It describes the stories about four Chinese immigrant mothers and their four American-raised daughters.

Jing-mei Woo, a daughter and her mother Suyuan Woo’s stories are more typical and complete than the other ones. Suyuan, the first generation immigrant to America, has been deeply influenced by Chinese traditional culture, while Jing-mei, the American-raised daughter, has been deeply influenced by American culture. The conflicts between the Chinese immigrant mother and the American-raised daughter emerge inevitably because they have different values and thoughts and their cultural backgrounds are quite different. Jing-mei grows up in the conflicts from her childhood to her adulthood. Whatever gaps and conflicts they have, they will eventually come to the reconciliation because they are of one blood all the way. The process of their mother-daughter relationship from the conflicts to the reconciliation is that of the Chinese traditional culture and American culture from its conflicts to its reconciliation essentially.

The paper will analyze the causes of the conflicts and the reconciliation between Jing-mei Woo’s and her mother Suyuan Woo to interpret their cultural implications:the conflicts and the reconciliation between the Chinese immigrant mother and the American-raised daughter reflect the conflicts and the reconciliation between Chinese culture and American culture. It reveals an inexorable trend in the multicultural development and also the author’s belief in the harmonious multicultural development and expectation for it.

Key words: mother-daughter relationship, conflict, reconciliation, Chinese and American culture
